Digestive disorders ( irritable bowel syndrome or IBS ) not only can be overcome by taking medicine . There are several stages of treatment that can be suggested , ranging
from education , dietary changes , to increased physical activity .
At the seminar Woman Through The Ages in Singapore some time ago , Dr. . Tan Chi Chiu , gastroenterology experts from Gleneagles Hospital Singapore , suggest some ways to cope with IBS .
"
The IBS management should be applied starting from number one onwards .
However , that often the opposite is true , " said Dr. . Chiu , just as written on Monday ( 02/06/2014 ) .
Here are seven steps recommended doctors for IBS patients :
1 . Education and entertainmentSuccessful management of IBS depends on the doctor -patient relationship and strong to certify the patient's symptoms . Patients need to be reminded that although IBS does not increase the
risk of dangerous diseases , the disease is classified as chronic and
may worsen at any time .
Make realistic expectations consistent with the limit . Involve the patient in deciding which therapy will be undertaken . Teach the patient to recognize the causes of stress ( if any ) and the techniques to avoid IBS .
2 . Changes in dietIBS can also be triggered by certain foods . Patients are advised to avoid gas -producing foods , foods containing lactose , or apply a low FODMAP diet . First identify the cause by trying these methods gradually.
Eating fiber-rich foods , avoiding foods that contain gluten , as well
as food allergy test can also be done even less effective .
3 . Physical activityResearch shows that physical activity beneficial to reduce symptoms of IBS . Approximately 102 IBS patients were asked to do 20-60 minutes of physical activity of medium to heavy 3-5 times per week .
After 12 weeks , there is a trend more and more patients progress clinically . Patients who berkegiatan fisikpun lower risk of conditions that are
getting worse than the IBS patients who do not improve physical activity
.
4 . Pharmacologic TherapyDrug therapy is used for moderate to severe symptoms . Therapy
begins from the dominant symptom , whether IBS - C ( constipation ) ,
IBS - D ( diarrhea ) , or abdominal pain and bloating . Review and modification at intervals of 2-4 weeks .
Antibiotics are not routinely recommended . If the patient has moderate to severe IBS without constipation , and
other therapies did not show improvement , encourage Rifaximin for two
weeks .
Meta-analysis showed that the overall IBS symptoms , consistency dirt ,
and abdominal bloating be improved with the antibiotics .
5 . If IBS is difficult to cureIf IBS is hard to cure , check the symptoms and the extent to which the symptoms have changed . Check also whether patients take medicine regularly and whether there
are characteristics to look out for such as weight loss or intestinal
bleeding .
6 . Therapy othersWhile
its role is unclear, herbs , acupuncture , supplements enzymes , mast
cell stabilizers such as Ketotifen , as well as mindfulness - based
stress reduction can try to cope with IBS .
