Though
more commonly used for weight loss and blood pressure , a study
suggests that diet is also effectively applied to prevent disease ,
including kidney stones . How?
The researchers say this may be the basis of the DASH diet ( Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension ) . The DASH diet includes the consumption of more fruits , vegetables ,
low fat dairy products , and prefer the consumption of wheat , fish ,
nuts , and foods rich in magnesium , potassium and calcium .
Until now there has been found a specific cause of kidney stones . They are formed when urine can not melt the crystalline minerals such as calcium , oxalate and uric acid . These crystals are then stuck together and create kidney stones .
"
Previous research recommends that kidney stone patients should apply a
low oxalate diet to prevent the formation of other stones . Yet now the
DASH diet can be more useful because it reflects a more balanced diet ,
making it easier and realistic to do in the long term , " said Dr. Kerry
Willis , researchers from the National Kidney Foundation , as quoted from Max Health News , Tuesday ( 11/03/2014 ) .
The
study, published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases conducted
involving 41 people who apply the DASH diet or a low oxalate diet for 8
weeks . On average the participants are implementing the DASH diet kidney stone risk fell by 35 percent . While they are applying a low oxalate diet the risk fell by 14 percent .
The
researchers concluded that the incorporation of calcium and rich in
oxalate intake is more effective in preventing oxalate kidney stones
than the limit . When consumed together , oxalate and calcium are more likely to be bound in the stomach and intestines . In the end , it is unlikely that kidney stones will form .
"
Most people do not eat the kind of nutrients such as oxalate , but a
diet consisting of a variety of nutrients . So right diet can be more
effective against the risk of kidney stone formation as a whole , " said
Dr. Nazanin Noori , who led the study from the Hospital for Sick
Children , Toronto .
Some
easy tips to prevent the formation of kidney stones in between drinking
lots of water , increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables ,
limiting consumption of high fat milk , salt and animal protein .
