For
generations , parents often give their children a spoonful of honey
before bed because the intake is believed to help relieve cough . What experts say ?
Yes , the World Health Organisation ( WHO ) and the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending honey for treating coughs . Dr Ronald McCoy , of the Royal Australian College of General
Practitioners , said there are several studies which also showed that a
spoonful of honey every few hours to reduce irritation in the throat .
"
WHO recommends honey for treating coughs in developing countries who
may have limited access to medicines . So although the evidence is not
strong , this show is most likely an effect of honey against cough ,
especially in children , " said Dr. McCoy , as quoted by ABC Australia , Tuesday ( 04/29/2014 ) .
A study from the U.S. found honey is better in reducing the severity and frequency of cough compared with no treatment . While in another study in 2012 , researchers found that honey is more effective for treating coughs than a placebo treatment .
" Given the existing research is more focused on the children , it is
unclear whether the honey also helps relieve cough in adults . , But
there's no harm in trying , " said the child's respiratory expert ,
Professor Anne Chang .
Adults
who did not have the disease in which they should avoid excessive
consumption of honey , such as diabetes , according to Prof. Chang no
problem using honey as a cough medicine . However, compared to drinking a spoonful of honey , Prof. Chang recommend you to use honey to add to it in a cup of lemon tea . So what exactly makes a positive impact on honey cough ?
" It remains unclear exactly how to treat a cough honey . Honey does
contain microbial properties , the combination of which may make it
effective . Honey coats the throat and trigger the swallowing mechanism ,
the sweetness is also the possibility to change the sensitivity of
sensory fibers , " said Prof Chang .
Although said to be safe for children , McCoy warned parents not to give honey to children if they are under 12 months . The reason , honey can be a source of infant botulism spores and the baby's immune system is not developed enough to handle it .
